Did You Know? Olives in America Started In Pensacola!

Pensacola isn't just the first European settlement of North America. It is also the birthplace of the North American olive! While Don Tristan de Luna's settlement in Pensacola was destroyed by a hurricane shortly after he arrived, the ships in his expedition were laden with barrels of olives, a staple of the Spanish diet. Inevitably, those olives made their way - by humans or hurricanes - to our shores, where they became the first archeologically documented olive tree in North America.
